“12 April 2003. This is a Murray Cod. The picture was taken in the Melbourne aquarium, and this is the colour it was. The Murray cod is a fairly iconic Australian fish, and apparently one of the biggest freshwater fish in the world “the largest on record was over 1.8 metres (6 ft) and approximately 113 kilograms (250 lb) in weight” (wikipedia).”

They are beautiful fish, and as you say an Aussie icon, something we should be proud of.
I’m still personally searching for my first ‘magic mark’ of over 1 meter
There’s something about this fish that I just have to release them, I also use barbless hooks, and stay away from bait fishing which can have them engulf the hook.
thanks for a great pic tho! Really like it

Hello Shade. I read that on Wikipedia, that the water they are in can effect their colour. I wondered if Melbourne Aquarium played on that. Or the lighting? It really surprised me at the time, it was the first time I’d seen a Murray Cod, and it wasn’t what I expected.

Hello from the Murray, home of the mighty Murray Cod
I haven’t really seen cod that colour, tho the colour of the water they are in does to some extent effect their appearance. Generally they are very green and lighter as they get older.
Check out some great pics of big fish on Rod’s site, he’s quite a legend for his promotion of catch and release methods for our natives, and for the big fish he finds :
