The ride home (Tasmanian version)

April 19th, 2009

1st April 2009, my garden.

Tuesday 14th April, was a beautiful day. It was the sort of day that I wished I was riding through the hills, instead of working.

When work finished, I turned right, instead of left which is the normal way home. I ended up beside the Huon, heading out toward Judbury; fast, winding, dirt road, and beautiful countryside.

At Jud creek, I crossed the Huon and headed back in toward town along the Huon again, then took a track south, leaving the river.

I navigated by the sun; a rarity here because of the high hills blocking its view. So long as I headed south and / or east I was right. I just took any interesting tracks that were going in those directions.

The tracks were generally fast, with lots of corners. A few were dead ends - finishing at a loading area for log trucks or a gate.

After an hour and a half of this, riding in isolation, I rode around a locked boom gate and hit a road. I headed east, and started to recognise the outskirts of Geeveston. From here I was five minutes from home.

Marble and fog

March 7th, 2009

27th February 2009

The Huon from in front of my house. I haven’t taken a photo of this for a long time.

Fog has started appearing again. Even on the road, early in the morning. It makes me anxious and apprehensive - I’m not ready for the big cold already. Frozen hands, fog, ice on the roads, having to drive the car, short days, electric blankets, frost and snow. What happened to Summer and swimming at the beach? Oh, what have I done? Let me back to where it’s warm! :-)

Wiebke’s feet

March 3rd, 2009

1st March 2009, my verandah.

Everyone who visits here, at my house, wants to sit on the verandah. Wiebke was no exception.

My verandah is often warm when it is cold everywhere else. It is sheltered from the wind, but nearly always in the sun.

My house is on a bit of a hill. It overlooks a bay. The other side of the river is easily over a kilometre away.

If you go to the bottom of my garden, and cross the road, you are at the water’s edge.

Wet Day

November 27th, 2008

15th November 2008, my place.

Today it is wet and overcast. It seems appropriate that I post this photo from a similar day nearly two weeks ago. It was raining at the time, misty and dark. This is part of the view I have from where I sit at my laptop. It is a quiet part of the Huon; most activity is from water birds fishing, fish jumping, and occasionally dolphins swimming along the shoreline hunting for food.

River Fog Train

May 22nd, 2008

River Train

“It was so cold this morning; as a Tasmanian friend says, cold enough to freeze your bits off.

Chugging down the middle of the river like a never ending train was a long stream of fog.”
